Early Life and Education

Salman Amin Khan was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 11, 1976. He was the child of immigrants—his mother was born in India and his father comes from Bangladesh. Khan attended public schools in Metairie, Louisiana, before enrolling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied mathematics, engineering and computer science. After graduating from MIT, Khan earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. He took a job as a financial analyst once he completed his graduate studies.

Khan Academy

Khan developed an interest in education while tutoring his cousin, Nadia. Initially communicating via an internet tool, Khan began posting his mathematics tutorials on YouTube in 2006. The videos attracted millions of viewers. In 2009, Khan quit his job as an analyst to devote himself full-time to the set of videos that formed Khan Academy. The academy provides free online instruction to students across the world.

While initially targeting individuals, Khan Academy has also been of use to classroom teachers in need of supplementary material in science and mathematics. Khan has emphasized the importance of formal, classroom instruction and professional certification in combination with the software and online tools that his company provides.

Recognition

The success of Khan Academy brought significant media attention to its founder. Khan has been profiled in print and interviewed on television. His efforts have attracted funding from major donors, including Google and Microsoft. Microsoft founder Bill Gates has stated that he uses Khan Academy software as part of his own children's education. Among Khan's speaking engagements are commencement addresses at MIT and Rice University, both of which he delivered in 2012.

Personal Life

Khan is married to physician Umaima Marvi. The couple lives with their children in the San Francisco Bay Area.
