Salman Amin Khan was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 11, 1976. He was the child of immigrants—his mother was born in India and his father comes from Bangladesh. Khan attended public schools in Metairie, Louisiana, before enrolling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied mathematics, engineering and computer science. After graduating from MIT, Khan earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. Khan developed an interest in education while tutoring his cousin, Nadia. Initially communicating via an internet tool, Khan began posting his mathematics tutorials on YouTube in 2006. The videos attracted millions of viewers. In 2009, Khan quit his job as an analyst to devote himself full-time to the set of videos that formed Khan Academy. The academy provides free online instruction to students across the world.While initially targeting individuals, Khan Academy has also been of use to classroom teachers in need of supplementary material in science and mathematics.
